Rare Crimson Lightning Captured in Skies
Three photography enthusiasts based in the island nation have successfully captured images of red lightning, counted as the least common light phenomena on Earth, in which bright red bursts become visible in the heavens.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
This group of artists had originally set out to photograph the Milky Way over the unique geological structures in the South Island of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.
They thought they would be blessed to get clear skies that evening, but their shooting session transformed into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer commented.
While reviewing his photographs for a stellar landscape and found he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he explained. “It was unbelievable – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and all sorts going on in the dark.”
Defining Red Sprites
Red sprites are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, caused by electrical storms. Differing from traditional lightning that strikes downward to the earth, red sprites ascend towards the upper atmosphere, creating shapes that are similar to pillars, root vegetables or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a red sprite was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the an educational institution.
Brief and Otherworldly Sightings
They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but an individual was fortunate. “I happened to be looking straight toward a sprite when it took place – an ideal happenstance viewing the appropriate section of the heavens and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he said.
Observing the phenomena was a dream for this individual, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It looks like you witness something that is not real, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to witness.”
Skill-Based and Creative Mastery
Photographing a red sprite needs a mastery of technical photography, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and artistic vision, the photographer said. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
A different team member remarked it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his career. “I could see the galactic band shining above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of illumination swayed above a storm far on the horizon,” he described.
A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no other images capturing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in one frame.
“It represented a unique instance when you know you’re witnessing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
