A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being falsely blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has learned.

Tragic Discovery

The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.

Untrue Accusations Begin

The investigation learned how his parent received a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."

In a testimony presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was not stolen in the beginning".

News coverage about the supposed taken remains attracted online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".

The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.

Emotional Wellbeing Impact

She explained that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.

"It would have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".

The teenager was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his passing.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".

When she talked to him about the alleged burglary, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.

Online Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied digitally after the allegations.

The inquest learned that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.

She had no worries on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".

She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is completely devastated".

He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".

School Response

The inquest heard from school staff at the local secondary school.

On November 8th, she "overheard some boys talking that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.

After the discussion, the educator said she rang Kai's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.

The proceedings learned his parents said they never receive that communication.

Official Conclusion

Senior investigator told the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.

Delivering a narrative finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.

"Likely untruths were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.

"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was released while investigations proceeded."

The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or added to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to determine his purpose."
