Woman Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
A woman stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 9 PM GMT Friday evening, West Midlands Police said.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
The force said officers would be in the downtown area on Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, in the downtown area."
Another individual, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came the city fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act occurred, understandably, it's terrible."
